Ruth and Nina are two Greenlandic women numbed by a shared history of trauma and grief. They begin on opposite sides of the fence of the semi-open correctional facility in Nuuk, where Ruth is serving a sentence of indefinite length. Nina, a filmmaker, leads a project in which inmates document their experiences using small cameras. Nina, impressed with Ruth’s candid video diaries, begins to visit her after the cameras are confiscated. As the barrier between filmmaker and participant breaks down, a profound connection forms. The two find solace in each other’s company, and their conversations—marked by active listening, shared vulnerability and a mutual desire for release—bring newfound hope for the future. As Nina carries her first child, Ruth, with Nina’s support, navigates the colonial justice system toward parole and reunion with her daughter. Set against the stunning Arctic landscape that surrounds the prison—a harsh metaphor for that which lies just out of reach—the film captures the transformative power of compassion to heal and restore humanity.
