World Records brings together the voices of scholars, critics, makers and curators who offer new and complex perspectives on documentary to challenge and extend its margins. Hot Docs invites audiences to three free study sessions with World Records that ask: What are Independents independent of?
How does criticism help sustain independent cinema? Criticism has been an integral part of the growth of nonfiction festivals over the past three decades, but it often takes on familiar forms: capsule reviews, the identification of new trends, breakout talents, and individual reviews. Should criticism evolve to address the increasingly complex forms of funding, exhibition, and distribution that shape what we watch on screen?
Session participants include Genevieve Yue, Chloé Trayner, and Juliano Gomes, and Girish Shambu, plus special guests.
