Jukedocs: Curated by Niko Stratis, this monthly series features music docs—from beloved classics to cult favourites—that expand beyond the boundaries of songs and their creators.

A good documentary, for me, is an indelible mark on the soul. Something that you see once and think about forever. A story that appears eternally as a fun fact in casual conversations and builds endless memories. When I tell people about A Band Called Death, I’m struck by the number of times folks still don’t know what I’m talking about. This story of three brothers, sons of a preacher, who formed a band called Death in Detroit. The story of an all Black punk rock band in the early days of a scene that has whitewashed its own history. A good documentary, like A Band Called Death, takes us beyond the songs and the artists and examines the work in the context of the world around it, and measures the scale of impact from its creation. - Niko Stratis
