When the stars align and rapper Antón Álvarez (a.k.a. C. Tangana) fatefully meets Yerai Cortés, a rising star of the Spanish flamenco scene, he becomes a partner in the guitarist’s emotional journey. Cortés unearths his family’s buried secrets in a bid to reconcile the past with the present and heal old wounds. Caught between tradition and modernity, Cortés channels his rich Gypsy heritage through soulful musical expression that resounds across generations. Captivating performances, both artful and natural, serve as a séance for Cortés’s beloved Tania, who died too young and was unable to tell her story, and to whom the film is dedicated. Intuitive camera work captures tender moments of intimate connection, such as a cigarette shared between loved ones, the lingering smoke a reminder of the ever-present magic in the air. The film pulses with flamenco’s vibrancy, its mournful soundtrack and raw emotion offering a romantic celebration of Gypsy culture—an evocative song for the dead. David Knipe.
