In recent years, more than seven million Venezuelans have fled the turmoil of their country. Exiled in their own homeland for various reasons, the five participants in this lyrical and poetic film grapple with daily challenges, from the pressing concern of earning enough money for food to the struggle of finding joy in an atmosphere of nation-wide despair. For Isabel, Darwin, Jesús, Elvira and Gregorio, life in Venezuela means carrying with them a metaphorical casa muerta—a house of the dead. Each has endured immeasurable loss—from Isabel’s loss of her hometown of Potosí by government-mandated flooding to Elvira and Gregorio’s loss of their beloved son Juan Pablo during anti-government protests. Remembering the ghosts of those who have died in dissent and those who have fled in search of hope, Casas Muertas beautifully renders their presence through visual metaphors, haunting reflections and an evocative score.
