What if the man who raised you and was a good father to you was also one of the most infamous warlords in history? When teenage Cindor Reeves’s sister Agnes married Charles Taylor, Taylor was an idealistic populist rebel, but his methodology quickly shifted to authoritarian rule after he secured Liberia’s presidency. In his youth, Reeves provides support to the Taylor regime but, guided by his strong sense of right and wrong, as an adult he becomes a whistleblower. His testimony and knowledge play a pivotal role in securing Taylor’s conviction at the International Criminal Court, making him the first former president to be convicted of war crimes and crimes against humanity since World War II, which were committed in neighbouring Sierra Leone. Living in hiding since Taylor’s conviction in 2003 and labelled a snitch and a traitor by his supporters, Reeves now reflects on his life, questioning whether the personal sacrifices he has made were truly worth the cost of his own family.
