After first meeting on the streets of Georgia a decade ago, director Ketevan Vashagashvili reunites with Zhana, now 29 years old, and her teenage daughter, Elene. Little has changed in the interim. Zhana works as a cashier at a local supermarket, still struggling to make ends meet.
Desperate to provide a more stable and dignified life for Elene, Zhana rents out her womb as a surrogate mother in Georgia’s unregulated surrogacy industry. This comes at a high cost as her body becomes weary after bearing five children. With each pregnancy, it also becomes more and more difficult to keep her growing belly a secret from Elene. The tables are turned when Elene matures and starts to understand her mother’s sacrifices and insists that Zhana follow her dreams.
The beauty of this heart-rending story lies in the strength and tenderness of the mother-daughter bond. Over the years, Vashagashvili has nurtured a close relationship with these participants—one that is full of trust. The result is a timeless tale about love that has no limits. Kinga Binkowska.
