When the Taliban come to power in Afghanistan in 2021, four courageous women—three former Members of Parliament and a journalist—are stripped of their positions and rights overnight and evacuated from the country for their safety. Resettled in Canada, they are heartbroken to be separated from their families and afraid for the women they’ve left behind, knowing that under the Taliban, restrictions on women’s rights are unparalleled in modern history. International organizations have condemned these abuses, yet there is no clear plan to adequately defend and fight for gender justice in Afghanistan.
Acknowledging this absence of concrete action and recognizing the Canadian government as one of few that boasts a “feminist foreign policy,” these four women take it upon themselves to mobilize their community and local politicians to action. Perceptive to the complicity of the international community, they remain resolute, reminding us how shockingly fragile equality and justice is for all of us.

Add your name to the #EndGenderApartheid campaign and encourage national and international leaders to recognize this form of systemic oppression in international law.
