When 16-year-old Runa’s mother freezes to death in the forest on the Polish-Belarusian border, the Kurdish girl has to grow up in a hurry to take care of her four younger brothers and her depressed and helpless father. The family deals with trauma in a refugee camp and tries to establish a new life in increasingly nationalistic Poland. Runa's greatest fear is being forced to return to Iraq, where Kurds face the threat of ISIS. But just as her dream of going back to school comes true, another threat appears—that of deportation. Taking her camera to the centre of the story with courage and humanity, celebrated director Agnieszka Zwiefka returns to Hot Docs with a brave and timely coming-of-age story that plunges deep into our global refugee crisis.
