As Christmas approaches, the people of Kinshasa are struggling to find access to electricity. Darkness has fallen over the city and, as with the passing of a recent election, it is easy for its millions of citizens to give up hope. Director Nelson Makengo, one of the most exciting new filmmaking voices of the moment, harnesses the colours of the night to create a unique, alluring, wholly immersive documentary experience. Rising Up at Night artfully captures the spirit of Kinshasa as the camera follows its inhabitants as they reinvent themselves, finding solace in community, in religion or in the gym, as they come together to seek hope amid the beauty and violence of the landscape. Makengo’s sensitive portrait explores the challenges of life in an environment plagued with violence and uncertainty about tomorrow.
