A pair of young activists struggle to find peace and freedom in the aftermath of the 2019 October Revolution in Iraq. Protests in Tahrir Square—against foreign intervention, sectarian quotas and the economic system that was imposed after the US invasion—were suppressed with violence but “the revolution inside of us didn't die. It lives on still today.” Milo is a feminist who sneaks out of the house dressed as a man, while Khalili is a filmmaker who uses his camera as a weapon against the regime. Both risk their lives to raise their voices and demand a better future in Iraq. An insight into the hopes and broken dreams of an entire generation that has known nothing but war since the US-led invasion and occupation of Iraq in 2003, Immortals uses hybrid storytelling elements to protect and project its subjects’ footage and lived experiences beyond the country’s closed borders.
