Through a personal voyage, director Raoul Peck deconstructs the making and masking of history, digging deep into the exploitative and genocidal aspects of European colonialism—from the Americas to Africa—and its impact on society today. In the first two episodes of this hybrid docu-series, Peck sets out to illuminate the intertwined currents of hate and bigotry running through history, focusing on the legacy of the United States as a colonial power. From the roots of how race first became institutionalized through to the story of Christopher Columbus and the use of the doctrine of discovery to justify the enslavement of millions of Africans, Peck challenges the audience to re-think the very notion of how history is being written. Exterminate All the Brutes provides a visually arresting journey through time and into the darkest hours of humanity.
