In the heart of Kenya’s Laikipia region, the battle between tradition and modernity, nature and civilization unfolds. Against the stunning backdrop of Laikipia, we are connected to the plight of the “pastoralists,” the Indigenous, semi-nomadic farmers whose livestock suffers due to drought and arid land. Climate change has left its mark on both the landscape and this society. As the pastoralists struggle to protect their livelihood, white ranchers, whose predecessors colonized the land three generations ago, are also feeling the effects of a changing landscape, seeing their way of life under threat. Locked in a longstanding feud, the white ranchers and native farmers each represent a version of their own history and connection to the land. But the storytelling cleverly offers insight into and empathy for each group’s vantage point, delivering a rare opportunity to understand both sides of the divide. The Battle for Laikipia serves as a powerful reminder of the ongoing struggles in post-colonial societies. It is not just a story of conflict over land; it is a call to action for reconciliation, understanding and meaningful change.
