The director of It's Only Life After All, Alexandra Bombach, is joined by Indigo Girl Emily Saliers for a candid discussion about 40 years of music-making adventures—sharing the obstacles, activism and life lessons of two queer friends who never expected to make it big but have left their harmonic mark on popular culture. Hosted by writer, activist and co-founder of Toronto's first all-women's rock band Mama Quilla II Susan G Cole.
About the film
The Grammy Award–winning Indigo Girls, Amy Ray and Emily Saliers, are Atlanta-based singer-songwriters whose unyielding political lyrics spoke to and inspired generations for over three decades. With honesty, humour and humility, Ray and Saliers look back over their careers from the early years to the present, reflecting on their struggles, successes, inner demons, and unwavering activism and engagement. They lived their lives and navigated their careers on their own terms while fighting for LGBTQ+ rights and environmental justice with legends like Indigenous activist Winona LaDuke. Award-winning director Alexandria Bombach (On Her Shoulders, 2018; Frame by Frame, 2015) returns to Hot Docs with this heartwarming journey of two queer friends who never expected to make it big. It’s both inspiring and timely in its message—you just might find yourself singing along as this punchy film brings you a little closer to fine. Heather Haynes
The screening on May 3 will be followed by a musical performance by the harmonious duo of lisa Olafson and Jennifer Foster.
