In a story that rivals some of cinema’s most epic love stories, we meet Augusto and Paulina, who, having shared their lives for 25 years, must now confront Augusto’s diagnosis with Alzheimer’s disease. As one of Chile’s most esteemed journalists, Augusto Góngora spent his lifetime resisting against Chilean dictator August Pinochet’s systematic erasure of collective memory. Now, he and actor, academic and former Chilean Minister of Culture Paulina Urrutia struggle to hold onto their own lifetime of memories in the face of his disease. Filmed through the sensitive lenes of both director Maite Alberdi (a Hot Docs alum and Academy Award nominee for The Mole Agent, 2020) and Paulina, we are given precious access to the intimate space of Paulina and Augusto’s loving relationship as they tenderly embrace one another through the next phase of their partnership. Having had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival, where it won the World Cinema Grand Jury Prize for Documentary, The Eternal Memory positions Alberdi as one of today’s most celebrated documentarians.
