In the remote village of El Eco, in the Mexican state of Puebla, the children play, laugh, learn while doing their homework together, and tend to their sheep and their elders in the midst of dramatic weather seasons. Their young hearts and minds make them vulnerable to absorbing everything that surrounds them. They receive love from their hard-working parents, all the while inheriting behaviour around sexism and traditional gender roles. The illness and frailty of one of their aging grandmothers alerts them to the long road ahead. The echoes of the mountains that hold them, and of the lives of the adults who precede them, resonate in their hearts and give shape to their future as they learn about the complexities of love, illness and, ultimately, growing up. The Echo is a cinematic delight, infused with stunning cinematography and a carefully composed music score by critically acclaimed director Tatiana Huezo (Tempestad, 2016). Lucila Moctezuma
