Here comes a story from the quiet nation of the Central African Republic, a quiet nation reeling from a civil war and rebuilding in the rubble. Eat Bitter zooms in on Thomas, a national with the ambition of owning a boat and starting a business as a materials extractor. He works on the river, gathering wet sand used for construction in the city, one project being a new bank. Construction manager Luan, meanwhile, deals with the burden of delivering the bank to the government on time. A Chinese migrant, his distance from home causes a strain on his marriage—relocation for his wife is a financial feat he cannot accomplish. Both men work tirelessly towards their goals as they attempt to get a piece of the pie in a burgeoning country filled with new financial prospects. But are their goals worth the expense of the land and relationships? Samah Ali
