For centuries, witchcraft has been seen as suspicious, harmful and even evil, but millennials Laura, Andra and Ayo are part of a growing trend of reviving the practice and reclaiming re-owning the term witch. Although they each came to this part of their identity in different ways, all three embrace the powers of sorcery and magic in their lives. For these young witches, it’s part of a feminist effort to de-stigmatize the craft and step into their own powers. Coven follows the women to Romania, Scotland and the southern United States as they learn more about their own wicca ancestors. Along the way, they discover surprising histories and connections that help them understand and channel their gifts. A film that attempts to undo a fraught view of witches and shines a light on a modern retake of an ancient worldwide practice. Aisha Jamal
