What does it mean to be truly altruistic? Hot Docs alum filmmaker Penny Lane tackles this question head on as she explores the world of organ donation. Submitting herself to the process of donating a kidney to a stranger, she begins to unpack the impact of such a decision. Through personal confessionals that balance humour and reflection, she also connects with others who contemplate the how and why of putting yourself through such a life-changing process to benefit someone you have never met. Lane completely does away with the division between filmmaker and subject, putting herself into the mix and never shying away from the vulnerability the act at hand brings about. In a world that seems increasingly divided, the journey of a Good Samaritan starts with contemplating the people around us and the lengths we can go to help those in need. Gabor Pertic
