Throngs of Southern Italian nurses travel overnight by bus to take part in massive job competitions in the north, where thousands vie for dozens of stable public health positions. In this timely road movie that challenges the belief that nursing is a field where you help others and you'll never be out of a job, the nurses share their experiences working in the private sector and their struggles with meagre pay, temporary contracts, burnout and disillusionment, while cramming for the brutal exams that will decide their future. Opening in 2018, Il Posto (A Steady Job) provides a microcosm of the job insecurity endemic to health care and continues into 2020 to show the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on these essential workers. This journey into the heart of Italy's social, moral and economic crisis gives a telling perspective on global trends—the illusion of job security and the low premium placed on dignity, caregiving, lifesaving knowledge, dangerous work and the nursing profession as a whole.
