Researchers at UCLA conducted a study about sex disorders in the 1950s and 60s. The resulting archive contained volumes of interviews with a number of transgender individuals, including the titular Agnes, who used the study to get the gender-affirming support she needed. A collaborative cast and crew of transgender artists and performers re-enact clinical interviews, brilliantly interpreted in a retro talk-show format. Framing Agnes presents a historical record, but more importantly deconstructs how media and medicine has represented transgender stories and confronts the power structures and imbalances that exist. The actors' reflections on their personal circumstances in relation to their interpretations of the study's participants deepens the layers of understanding, as the film moves fluidly between conversations and testimony. Director Chase Joynt's Sundance Award–winning follow-up to No Ordinary Man is another tour de force, bringing down the fourth wall and reconstructing cinematic conventions to highlight a vital piece of transgender history.
