Hidden Histories: Buried stories, brought to light

A filmmaker returns to China to untangle the roots of his family's estrangement. As an illegal second child under the country's punitive one-child policy, his parents paid a steep price for his existence—roughly three times his father's annual salary and the end of his political career—that left a lasting legacy of resentment and guilt between them. Four Journeys is a unique and creative confrontation with the past, full of unexpected twists and turns, cruel secrets and hidden sadness. By facing all of the hurt and misunderstanding they hold against one another, can this dysfunctional family find a way to communicate and put their grievances to rest? A devastating look at the effects of Maoism, the Cultural Revolution and the government's strict birth policies on a single family, the filmmaker's determination to heal by way of forgiveness, gratitude and apology is a priceless lesson we can all learn from.
