Truth and Dare: A new monthly screening series highlighting cutting-edge documentaries that challenge the idea of what a doc needs to be. Acting as a spotlight for future cult classics, this series celebrates the most mind-expanding, form-pushing works emerging from the documentary world. With feature films from around the globe programmed alongside daring locally made shorts, each screening will be a one-of-a-kind, can’t-miss event!

Hardcore fans of the iconic indie rock band Pavement will not be strangers to the band’s persistent indifference to notability. When frontman Stephen Malkmus had the characteristically unconventional request that a documentary about the band be made by a non-documentary filmmaker, post-mumblecore darling Alex Ross Perry (Her Smell, Listen Up Philip) whipped up this not-to-be-missed, maximalist hybrid film that will stimulate Pavement devotees new and old alike.

Chronicling a reunion concert, a retrospective museum exhibition, a jukebox musical entitled Slanted! Enchanted! A Pavement Musical and the making of a big-budget biopic about the band all at once, Perry irreverently captures Pavement’s capital-S slacker-rock sensibility. The film is a relentless, multi-media quest to mythologize a band that has resisted traditional fame and canonization at every turn. A collage of archival footage from Pavement’s history and footage from Perry’s array of sardonic homages to the band, this cinematic fanzine is an antidote to the glossy biopics that ignore the humanity behind our favourite music.

Come by early to receive a wild zine specially designed for the event, take part in some Pavement-themed karaoke AND catch a screening of the music video for Montreal indie rock group Laughing’s “Don’t Care,” directed by Rodna Howart.

Join Pavements director Alex Ross Perry for a post-screening Zoom Q&A.

Plus, swing by Collective Arts Toronto Taproom after the screening for a concert by Toronto-based Pavement cover band Concrete. Doors open at 11:00 PM, and the band goes on at 11:30 PM.
