Shakespeare, Sorta: True to the Bard’s legacy of theatre for the masses, these iconic adaptations with 90s heart throbs, senior proms, and pop soundtracks are the prefect way to ring in the new school year.

“I hate the way I don’t hate you—not even close, not even a little bit, not even at all.” Kat’s sonnet may rival the words of even Shakespeare himself (right?). Set in a 1990s Seattle high school, Bianca is pretty, popular, and forbidden to date until her older sister Kat does. Kat is an abrasive and independent feminist with no interest in dating, until bad boy Patrick attempts to charm his way through her shrewish exterior. Considered by many a crowning gem of 90s teen movies, this shaken-up Shakespeare adaptation introduced America to a young, up-and-coming Heath Ledger, and featured an iconic 90s cast that includes Julia Stiles, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Larisa Oleynik, David Krumholtz, Andrew Keegan, Gabrielle Union and Allison Janney. 10 Things I Hate About You stays true to the core themes of its source material while contemporizing Shakespeare to expose the emotional truth that may be lost in translation to modern readers.
