Growing up in the early ’90s, teenager Sandi Tan set out to put Singapore on the cinematic map by channeling her creativity into an indie movie. Alongside two of her friends, she develops a unique narrative highlighting her country in a way that has never been seen before. To make the film, she reaches out to her mysterious American mentor, Georges Cardona. After an extended shooting process, Georges randomly disappears, taking the film reels with him. Twenty-five years later, the reels resurface, bringing memories and unanswered questions with them. Shirkers is at once a memoir of a passionate young artist robbed of her work, an exceptionally captivating look at coming of age in a country not often depicted on the big screen, and a mystery of the film that could have been.
