In Mel Brooks' oft-quoted and loving spoof of Frankenstein, respected medical lecturer Dr. Frederick Frankenstein aka "Fronk-en-steen" (played by the wily and wild-haired Gene Wilder in a career-defining performance) learns that he has inherited his infamous grandfather's estate in Transylvania.

Arriving at the castle, Dr. Frankenstein soon begins to recreate his grandfather's experiments with the help of servants Igor (Marty Feldman), Inga (Teri Garr) and the fearsome Frau Blücher (Cloris Leachman). After he creates his own monster (Peter Boyle), new complications ensue with the arrival of the doctor's fiancée, Elizabeth (Madeline Kahn).

"Wilder's hysteria seems perfectly natural. You never question what's driving him to it; his fits are lucid and total. They take him into a different dimension” (Pauline Kael, The New Yorker).

"A lot of the credit for that goes to the performances of Gene Wilder, as young Frankenstein, and Peter Boyle as the monster. They act broadly when it’s required, but they also contribute tremendous subtlety and control” (Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times).
