Truth and Dare: A new monthly screening series highlighting cutting-edge documentaries that challenge the idea of what a doc needs to be. Acting as a spotlight for future cult classics, this series celebrates the most mind-expanding, form-pushing works emerging from the documentary world. With feature films from around the globe programmed alongside daring locally made shorts, each screening will be a one-of-a-kind, can’t-miss event!
Twentieth-century cyberspace cinema offered viewers a glimpse into the destructive path technology may lead us down. We didn’t listen, and as our society barrels deeper into collapse, we return to this cinema for further clarity. So Unreal, directed by indie film sensation Amanda Kramer - Ladyworld (2018), Please Baby Please (2022) - is both a chilling exploration of cyberpunk worlds and a loving homage to the great sci-fi films of 1981-2001. Neophytes to the genre will find a stack of wild new titles to add to their watchlists; while fans of films like Hackers (1995), Arcade (1993) and eXistenZ (1999) will appreciate Kramer’s rich thematic reads. What from these flicks has come to fruition in the 21st century? What horrors await us?
Collaging the aesthetics of YouTube video essays with glitched out late-90’s computer imagery, So Unreal feels forged from the ashes of a technologically-crumbled society. Debbie Harry - lead singer of Blondie and an icon of 80’s sci fi - narrates the film, offering a unique vocal performance that recalls early IM chatbots. This audio-visual spectacle is not to be missed on the big screen.
