Sense and Sensibility is a critically acclaimed adaptation of Jane Austen’s classic novel, directed by Ang Lee and written by Emma Thompson, who also stars as Elinor Dashwood.
The film follows the Dashwood sisters, pragmatic Elinor (Thompson) and passionate Marianne (Kate Winslet), as they navigate love, loss and societal expectations after their family’s sudden financial downfall. While Elinor quietly grapples with her feelings for the reserved Edward Ferrars (Hugh Grant), Marianne falls deeply for the charming but unreliable John Willoughby (Greg Wise), only to realize the value of true character over charm. The film’s ensemble cast also features Alan Rickman as the honourable Colonel Brandon, who quietly pines for Marianne, and Gemma Jones and Tom Wilkinson in supporting roles.
Known for its stunning cinematography, lush period details and emotional depth, Sense and Sensibility won Emma Thompson an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay and was nominated for six other Oscars, including Best Picture. The film masterfully explores themes of love, class and resilience, making it one of the finest Austen adaptations to date.
