In recognition of Black History Month, our For Viola presentation of No Other Land will be preceded by an introduction from Rania El Mugammar. A Sudanese artist, abolitionist, community organizer and social justice educator, Rania will contextualize the screening with a discussion of historical and contemporary solidarities between Black and Palestinian liberation struggles.
For Viola is grateful to present one of 2024’s essential films—a work that is currently without North American distribution despite its status as one of the year’s most celebrated documentaries.
Captured over four years by a collective of Palestinian and Israeli filmmakers, No Other Land is a powerful portrait of the West Bank community of Masafer Yatta and its struggle against a relentless campaign of demolitions and expulsions carried out by Israeli occupation forces.
The film is also a study of solidarity between two of its own authors: Basel Adra, a Palestinian activist who grew up in occupied Masafer Yatta, and Yuval Abraham, an Israeli journalist based in Jerusalem. Theirs is a complex friendship, at times challenged by the stark injustice of apartheid.
Working together with co-directors Hamdan Ballal and Rachel Szor, the result of their collaboration is a vital witnessing and remarkable feat of creative resistance.
