A Year of Austen: In celebration of Jane Austen’s 250th birthday, Hot Docs Cinema presents: A Year of Austen—a monthly screening series featuring beloved Austen adaptations on film that showcase the author’s enduring hold on literature, the romance genre and pop culture.
Join Hot Docs for another installment in our Year of Austen series.
Loosely adapted from Jane Austen’s 1815 novel Emma, Clueless gives us the now-iconic Cher Horowitz, a wealthy, popular and good-natured high-school student on a mission to do “good deeds.” Fixing her sights on a “clueless” transfer student, Cher pounces with a makeover mission that soon expands into a match-making mess. While the small village of Highbury is replaced with Beverly Hills, true to Austen’s original Emma, Cher eventually comes to realize that the most clueless of all is her own dear self. When Austen wrote Emma, she set out to write “a heroine whom no one but [herself] will much like.” As if! More than 200 years later, Emma is among Austen’s most beloved heroines, and paved the way for her iconic 90s counterpart, Cher. Clueless is yet one more reminder of Austen’s timelessness and enduring impact on pop culture.
