Hot Docs is saddened to learn that one of its founders, Debbie Nightingale, passed away on Thursday, July 10.
In 1993, Debbie, along with Paul Jay, was instrumental in founding the documentary showcase that would eventually become Hot Docs. She helped to raise the initial $100,000 that got Hot Docs Festival off the ground, and served as its first festival manager and later as executive director. She recognized the significance of the documentary medium within the Canadian film and television landscape, and launched a showcase that would not only honour it, but continue to uplift it and introduce it to larger audiences over the next several decades. In addition to her work with Hot Docs, Debbie was a vital member of the Canadian film and television industry, having produced features, series, and documentaries, as well as numerous events, since she began working in the field in 1979.
Every part of the Hot Docs we know today grew from what Debbie helped establish. She recognized the importance of documentary filmmaking and providing a place where filmmakers, funders and audiences could connect.
Without her, we wouldn’t be here. Her legacy will be forever felt and she will be truly missed.
Debbie's obituary can be found here. The family has let us know that memorial plans are still being finalized.
