Watch List: It Will All Come Out in the Wash

Filmmaker Nina Menkes' new documentary, an expansion of the powerful talk she delivered at this year's Sundance Film Festival, traces the oppressive legacy of the male gaze in popular film, and how the very language of film and how we understand it is shaped by fundamentally sexist shot design. In Brainwashed: Sex-Camera-Power, Menkes offers counterexample films that are constructed through the eyes of their female protagonists - three of which are showcased here in our Brainwashed Corrective Watchlist: It Will All Come Out in the Wash - that defy the male gaze and show us an alternative path forward; one that can help to level the playing field and abolish the mistreatment of women in film.
