The CrossCurrents Canada Doc Fund is a Canadian fund that fosters original storytelling from creators with unique vantage points for feature or short documentaries in development or production. The fund is open to emerging and sophomore documentary filmmakers who are Indigenous, Francophone, Deaf and/or have a disability, racialized and/or persons of colour.

ELIGIBILITY
Applicants must be:
- The (co)director(s), and majority rights holder attached to the film project
- An emerging or sophomore storyteller with three or fewer professional directing credits
- In good standing with Hot Docs at time of application submission
- A Canadian citizen or permanent resident
- Of at least one of the following priority groups: Indigenous, Francophone, Deaf and/or have a disability, racialized and/or persons of colour.
All projects must:
- Be of high quality and suitable for theatrical release, broadcast or online release
- Not be proposals that are school, institute or university course work, TV or web series, or fiction pieces
- Not be completed by Hot Docs in April 2023. (The fund seeks to support projects that will be in development or production at this time.)
- Be prepared to assign copyright to a Canadian incorporated company, majority held by the (co)director(s) before receiving the grant
Eligibility for Re-Application
- A project can submit to the Development Fund and, then submit to the Production Fund at a later deadline, whether or not the Development Fund application was successful.
- Submitted projects that do not receive funding may submit a maximum of one additional time only in another stream within the fund. Requests for resubmission must be received in writing to [email protected] In some instances, the selection committee may invite a project to resubmit and they will be notified directly.

The online application must be submitted in English or French on or before the deadline. There is no application fee. All materials received by Hot Docs are confidential.

Application Support
The CrossCurrents Canada Doc Fund application available is considerate of technological, social and accessibility barriers to the application process.
The electronic application is available in English and French. The application process will be considerate of the applicant’s ability to communicate their submission; accommodations that can be made may include an oral or video submission component.

SELECTION PROCESS
Applicants will be informed of the Selection Committee’s decision approximately four months after the submission deadline.
Successful applicants will be determined by peer-review selection committees. Applications deemed complete and eligible will be submitted to the Selection Committee made up of representatives from Hot Docs, Netflix and members of the filmmaking community including representatives from across priority groups.
Decision Criteria
Applications will be evaluated based on feasibility, production ability, creative merit, audience, and fit with mandate.
