The Doc Shop Guidelines

The Doc Shop is Hot Docs’ market platform for documentaries seeking sales, acquisitions, and festival programming opportunities.

The below 2021 guidelines are for reference only and are subject to change.

Hot Docs accepts submissions of creative documentaries of all lengths and subject matters for inclusion in The Doc Shop. Projects with international appeal that would suit theatrical, broadcast, VOD or educational audiences are welcome.

We accept:

  • Films in the English language or with English subtitles
  • Rough-cut, fine-cut, or completed films


Doc Shop submissions are available to All-Access Online Pass holders only.

The fee for each film submission to The Doc Shop is:

  • Early Bird Rate (until March 23): $50
  • Regular Rate: $75

Discounted rates are available for bulk submissions. If you are interested in submitting 5 films or more films, please contact [email protected].

Films will be available online from April 29, 2021 to April 1, 2022, or until removed at the rightsholders’ request.


Step 1: Register for an All-Access Online Pass
To submit a film to The Doc Shop, you must first register for a Hot Docs All-Access Online Pass.

Step 2: Submission Form & Payment
After completing your registration, you will receive a confirmation email containing a link to The Doc Shop submission form.

Step 3: Upload Screener
You will be contacted with instructions on how to upload your screener by April 1, 2021.

Hot Docs reserves the right to rule on all issues not expressly covered in these guidelines.
