Between 1927 and 1936, Rachel Rockstein filmed her family’s daily life: picnics, weddings and vacations. She had an excellent eye; her footage is exceptionally detailed and atmospheric. Rockstein’s cinematic record is a rare and illuminating document of the effects of the Nazi regime on German Jews. One sees the rise of fascism as a terrifying subtext to the archival imagery. Thanks to Rockstein’s thoughtful diary entries, written in some cases years after her successful move to New York, this film rises above standard Holocaust rhetoric and becomes a meditation on memory, exile and loss.
