Rich archival footage, contemporary interviews and eyewitness accounts are used to great effect to tell the grim story of Saddam Hussein’s brutal campaign to cleanse Iraq of its Kurdish population. During its loathsome reign, it is estimated that Hussein’s Baath Party’s genocidal Operation Anfal (“spoils of war”) led to the destruction of thousands of Kurdish villages and the death of untold thousands. Hussein’s fall from power in 2003 enabled some secret mass-burial sites to be unearthed. Based on clothing and human remains, it was determined that one such site was the final resting place for thousands of men arrested and deported from a village in the Barzan region of Iraq. The remains are returned home, with great ceremony and deep sadness, to what became a village of widows when all its men were forcibly deported decades earlier.
