Hot Docs 2019 Audience Awards

The winner of the Hot Docs Audience Award is Maxima (D: Claudia Sparrow, USA), the story of Máxima Acuña, an Indigenous Peruvian farmer who refuses to cower to a multi-billion-dollar corporation that wants her land for its mining operation.

On Sunday night, Prey (D: Matt Gallagher, Canada) received the Rogers Audience Award for Best Canadian Documentary, along with a $50,000 cash prize, courtesy of Rogers Group of Funds. Prey, a riveting story of deceit, corruption and vindication that follows a survivor of clergy sexual abuse as he and his lawyer take on the Catholic Church in an Ontario court, also won the DGC Special Jury Prize for Canadian Feature Documentary at Hot Docs this year.
