Clandestine construction contracts, weapons sales and oil were at the centre of the relationship between Israel and pre-revolution Iran under Shah Pahlavi’s regime. But for most of the Israeli families who lived in Iran, there was a willful blindness to the backroom deals, hypocrisy and greed, and they were unprepared for the massive upheaval that turned their “Persian paradise” into hell. Director Dan Shadur looks back at his own family’s role in those last days in Tehran. With rare 8mm archival footage and interviews with many members of the Israeli ex-pat community, Before the Revolution sheds a new light on the revolution and the tumultuous intertwined history of two countries.
