Winner of the documentary prize at the 2007 Hungarian Film Week, Balkan Champion is the filmmaker’s attempt to understand the path of a Transylvanian Don Quixote who just happens to be her father. “After the revolution my father became the Second Chairman in our district,” says Kinces, who is Romanian by birth but ethnic Hungarian. “He gave a blazing speech against the former secret service, the Securitate, saying he’d fight personally to put them all behind bars. It was political suicide.” The choices of Kinces’ father and their repercussions on his family reveal the palpable tensions between the personal and the political, not to mention the deep contradictions of a country. This country is Romania, very recently the newest member of the European Union. The Kinces’ family story emerges as complex family drama played out against the inextricable historical forces of the Balkan conflict. Sean Farnel.
