Asylum is a beautiful and poignant account of a deeply disturbing and humiliating event, one that is all too common in many African countries. Baaba Andoh tells the story of fleeing her homeland of Ghana to escape her estranged fathers attempt to circumcise her, and the degradation she experiences in the U.S. when she tries to apply for refugee status. Comprised entirely of a mesmerizing and stunningly photographed interview with Baaba, and images of Ghana from Baabas childhood, the film is a powerful comment on the conflicting forces of culture, family and
government. Shannon Abel.
