David Daniel is a former high-wire artist raising a family on an idyllic piece of property in rural Texas when it’s announced that the Keystone XL pipeline will cross his land. He rallies neighbours and environmental activists to join his bid to block the plan. He files legal injunctions and organizes a final act of acrobatic brinkmanship in his treetops. But is the government’s plan to transport tar sands crude underground from Canada to the US still up for debate or a done deal? Above All Else is a brave first-person account of what happens when an individual stands up to corporate bullies and government interests. One man’s demand for truth and transparency reveals how honest landowners are treated, how protesters—not polluters—are labeled “eco-terrorists,” and how demand for oil has become so great that civil liberties and justice are sacrificed to safeguard capitalism and “national security.” Angie Driscoll
