When Khitam’s arranged marriage to an Arab Israeli man ends in divorce, Muslim law requires that their six young children are awarded to her husband, despite his abusive past. The situation is further complicated when the Gaza-born Khitam is denied Israeli citizenship, and she finds herself battling a patriarchal court where women are disadvantaged, and a state where she is considered an illegal resident. As her Dickensian custody and citizenship battles with the courts persist, and Khitam is no closer to a resolution, she decides to kidnap her children. With remarkable access and an unflinching lens, award-winning filmmaker Ibitsam Marana captures the extremes of this frustrating and volatile situation with sensitivity and purpose. Chris McDonald.
